June 21,2016
Fellow Brewers,

I hope this email finds you all well.

The response to participate in the All You Need Is Love project has been amazing. Thank you!

As mentioned prior, there are a number of things we promised to follow up on. Below you will find an initial list of recommended charities benefiting the victims and their families, as well local organizations championing peace, equality and tolerance. Included is a brief description of each charity, as well as a link to their organization.

Regarding marketing materials – we’ve supplied two graphics: All You Need Is Love Collaboration graphic, and the Rainbow Hop graphic. We ask that you download these from the following link and leverage them when promoting your beers. We’d also like to highly encourage the use of the following hashtags when talking about your beers online: #AllYouNeedIsLove & #SDCollab

A number of you have moved around your schedules to partake in this project, and we know many more are doing the same. We’d like to thank the following breweries for jumping on board thus far, and we hope this list continues to grow:

Hillcrest Brewing Company, Second Chance Beer Co., Belching Beaver Brewery, Wavelength Brewing Co, Border X Brewing, Intergalactic Brewing Company, ChuckAlek Independent Brewers, Indian Joe Brewing

SAN DIEGO – Hillcrest Brewing Company’s Head Brewer Austin Copeland and Assistant Brewer Clinton Shaver collaborate with Karl Strauss’ Paul Segura, R&D Brewmaster, to create “All You Need Is Love – a hoppy Session Red Ale,” that will raise funds for the victims of the Pulse nightclub attack.

In an email released today to the San Diego Brewing Community Paul Segura explains,

“In the wake of the recent Orlando tragedy, KARL and Hillcrest Brewing Company have come together to brew a beer in support of those affected. The beer, which we’re calling All You Need Is Love – a hoppy Session Red Ale – will be brewed at our Downtown brewpub early next week, and will be made available at all Karl Strauss Brewpubs, Hillcrest Brewing Company, as well as other fine craft beer establishments in and around San Diego beginning July 15th (Pride Day). Proceeds will benefit organizations aiding in the recovery of victims and their families, as well as select local organizations championing peace, equality and tolerance.

We would like to encourage the SD brewing community to participate in this movement, and unify in their support by brewing interpretations of All You Need Is Love. The beer can be any style, and your contribution of proceeds can be made however you wish. Details outlining recommended charities and funds are still being identified, and we will publish a list of organizations in the coming days.”

The collaboration between HBC and Karl Strauss is the beginning of a larger project in hopes that additional breweries across San Diego will create their own variations and donate funds to the Orlando LGBT Community. HBC has already had help from Intergalactic Brewing Company with the initial batch of “All You Need Is Love,” with other breweries reaching out to support.

“This project is so incredibly heart warming to all of us at MO’s Universe,” explains Marketing Director Lukas Volk. “While many might think this tragedy would divide communities, we’re finding quite the opposite. We have been collaborating with Karl Strauss’ brewing team and marketing department over the last three days to launch a project showing that the LGBTQ Community has strong allies who are here to help in a time of need.”

Segura’s email continued with,

“Our hope is to leverage the talent, creativity, and camaraderie of our local brewing community and make a difference for those in need. Our encouraged release date for all brews will be July 15th in recognition of the kickoff to Pride Weekend.

We have partnered with the San Diego Brewers Guild and will be organizing a list of all participants, as well as coordinating various PR efforts in the coming weeks. If you’re able to pitch in, we’re asking you to send an email to describing what you plan to brew, and we will include you on ongoing outreach.

Stay tuned for updates as the All You Need Is Love project continues.”

More about Karl Strauss Brewing Co.:
Back in the mid-1980s, San Diego was void of the thriving beer scene it has today. In fact, the city had not seen fresh beer since Prohibition, and the term “craft beer” didn’t exist. But that wasn’t going to stop Chris Cramer and Matt Rattner; two college buddies eager to change the status quo. Inspired by a brewpub Chris came upon while traveling through Australia, the pair had a dream: bring local, handcrafted beer back to San Diego.

It was on February 2, 1989 that Karl Strauss Brewing Company officially opened its doors in downtown San Diego and kicked off the city’s craft beer industry. Happily, as Karl Strauss Brewing Company grew, so did the industry as a whole. San Diego quickly became home to more breweries, many of whom got their start with Karl Strauss. Brewers and beer enthusiasts alike came to Karl Strauss, learned about quality and consistency from the best, and went off to create their own breweries. To this day, we take great pride in having influenced many of the brewers that now make up the DNA of our local brewing community.
