Ballast Point and Hillcrest Brewing Company Collaborate on Annual PRIDE Brew for 2018

SAN DIEGO (May 23, 2018) – Local Craft Brewery Ballast Point and Hillcrest Brewing Company come together to collaborate on Hillcrest Brewing Company’s annual PRIDE Brew for 2018.

Hillcrest Brewing Company was honored to be approached by the nationally renowned Ballast Point Brewing in a collaboration to show support for the LGBTQ community.

In early 2018, Kelly Tidwell of Ballast Point Brewing, sat down with the head brewer Clinton Shaver for Hillcrest Brewing Company (HBC) and pitched the idea for a collaboration brew with HBC during Pride. Knowing that HBC has an annual PRIDE brew, Kelly recommended working on this brew together at Ballast Point’s brewing facility.

“Since joining Ballast Point four years ago, I’ve wanted to integrate my LGBT and craft beer communities. Last year we made coozies, coasters and stickers to hand out at Pride, but this year we wanted to do more. Shaver and I were having a beer last December and the idea of doing a collaboration beer for Pride came together. It still hasn’t sunk in that this idea has become a reality, and it means the world to me how supportive Ballast Point has been to me and the LGBT community as a whole,” stated Tidwell.

Kelly, who is a member of the LGBTQ community, initiated a campaign last year to show Ballast’s support for LGBTQs last year by incorporating a rainbow design into the Ballast Point’s logo on their tap handles. These were provided to accounts all across Hillcrest, San Diego’s prominent LGBTQ neighborhood and nationally to those who requested.

“When Kelly presented the idea to the HBC team, we were all super excited by the idea. Being that we are just a small barrel brewery, this collaboration allowed HBC to participate in a batch much larger than we could ever produce. The ability to get our name into similar LGBTQ markets in northern california including San Fran and LA is fantastic for such a small brewery that’s gay owned and operated,” explains Marketing Director Lukas Volk.

Volk goes on to say, “The LGBTQ community frequently travels between cities for Pride celebrations, festivals and vacations – name recognition for Ballast and Hillcrest Brewing is important to us when visitors come to San Diego.”

The PRIDE ‘18 Brew is set to release first in June for National Pride Month and will only be available in San Diego at Hillcrest Brewing Company and Ballast Point locations. The brew will later be available for LA Pride on June 10th in select West Hollywood bars and also available during Out at the Fair in Del Mar, Ca.

Described as a Cucumber Lager, PRIDE ‘18 is described as a classic, crisp traditional lager with German Pilsner malt and Bock yeast with a dash of cucumber offering ripe melon and slightly bitter notes, followed by pleasant spicy and floral characteristics from the German hops.

For purchase information, please contact Ballast Point at (858) 790-6900

National Beer Day in Hillcrest

April 1, 2016 by Bryan

Hillcrest Brewing Company is ready for National Beer Day. Are you?

National Beer Day Hillcrest San Diego

We’re totes ready for our favorite day of the year. National Beer Day! What better way to celebrate than a $4 Hillcrest Brewing Company draught. We’re serving them up from 6PM to 11PM on Thursday April 7th, 2016. If you haven’t already checked out our beer menu, click here and get a gander.

You might be asking yourself, how did such a day even originate? Well wiki says,

National Beer Day is a celebration of the Cullen–Harrison Act being signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 22, 1933. Upon signing the legislation, Roosevelt made his famous remark, “I think this would be a good time for a beer.”[5][6] The law went into effect on April 7 of that year, allowing people to buy, sell and drink beer containing up to 3.2% alcohol by weight (or 4.05% by volume) in states that had enacted their own law allowing such sales. People across the country responded by gathering outside breweries, some beginning the night before. On that first day, 1.5 million barrels of beer were consumed, inspiring the future holiday.[7] Today, April 7 is recognized as National Beer Day and April 6 is known as New Beer’s Eve.[8]

Either way, we’re delighted to drink a draught or three as the U.S. once again turns another regular day into an excuse to drink. -like we needed it!-

Once you’ve quenched your thirst with our award winning brews, check out our awesome food menu. We’ve got pizzas, sandwiches, wings and salads. Give our pizza of the month a go – it’s the “You Gotta Be Bruschetting Me.” A pie topped with green sauce, seasoned chicken, bruschetta (tomatoes, garlic, balsamic), with chopped basil and a balsamic glaze drizzle.

And with that, we’ll just say CHEERS!

Red Ribbon Ale to Honor World AIDS Day

HILLCREST BREWING COMPANY’S RED RIBBON ALE

SAN DIEGO – MO’s Universe continues yearlong philanthropy with Hillcrest Brewing Company’s Red Ribbon Ale sale proceeds going towards The Scripps Research Institute’s HIV/AIDS research.

Hillcrest Brewing Company (HBC) announced this week that they will be brewing a Red Ribbon Ale beer to honor World AIDS Day.

The brewing company’s head brew master, Austin Copeland, will also honor his late father, Steven Carey, with this batch.

“My father, Steven Carey, owned a popular salon downtown in the 80’s and 90’s named Checkers. It was cool having a gay dad, I guess my life was a bit like The Birdcage. He died of AIDS in 1991 when I was very young. I remember getting picked on and made fun of about it,” Copeland remarks.

“For anyone that remembers the height of the AIDS scare, it was a terrible thing that affected tons of people and their loved ones. I wanted to do something in my position as a brewer to help the next generation and make sure it doesn’t affect them like it did me.”

MO’s Universe will offer HBC’s Red Ribbon Ale at all four of it’s locations starting on December 1st. A $2 donation will be made to The Scripps Research Institute’s HIV/AIDS program for every glass of the Red Ribbon Ale ordered.

“Scripps Research HIV/AIDS research program houses one of Scripps’s most prolific scientists, Dr. Dennis Burton, who is a world-renowned HIV/AIDS researcher. He has received considerable support from the Gates Foundation, The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, and other philanthropists and funding organizations,” Nick Burchfield Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations, The Scripps Research Institute.

Lukas Volk, Marketing Director for MO’s Universe explains, “Everyone at MO’s Universe is pleased to see dollars going towards research that happens in our own backyard. Our community has long been touched by this unforgiving disease and we’re excited to hear of all the new progress The Scripps Research Team is making to eradicate it.”

Guests of MO’s Universe will also be able to donate their MO’s Universe Frequent Diner Reward Points during the month of December towards the Scripps Research fund.

“If we can generate just a little bit of money for a great cause, and give directly to groundbreaking research, it will be an awesome victory,” Copeland concludes.

More about the beer:
HBC’s Red Ribbon Ale is a Session Red IPA with Mosaic, Simcoe and Amarillo hops. It will contain a 4.5% ABV and medium bitterness with aromatic notes of citrus and stone fruit. The brew has a rich copper color with Munich malt backbone and caramel wheat.

More about Hillcrest Brewing Company:
The world’s first “Out and Proud LGBT Brewery” is located next door to the iconic Hillcrest Pride Flag. The fourth in line of the world famous Hillcrest landmark restaurant group, MO’s Universe, HBC features handcrafted beer and stone fired pizzas with growlers & kegs to-go. Pouring only grains and grapes, our hunky brewsters can direct your taste buds to any one of HBC’s own eight microbrews, or 16 all local guest taps whose own breweries have each defined the taste of their neighborhoods.
